I ran in the inaugural Damon Runyon 5K Run/Walk for Cancer Research yesterday at Yankee Stadium and raised $2,570. My goal was $3,500, and while I didn’t reach it in advance, donations can be made through December 18, 2009.

According to the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation, more than $300,000 was raised for cancer research. How about a little more, affiliate marketers?!

100% of the money raised will be used by the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation to fund innovative research by today’s most brilliant young scientists, who are racing to find the causes and cures for all types of cancer.

It was a really near experience to run through all of the areas of Yankee Stadium for a 5k. We entered at the Great Hall.

Waiting to be moved into the start area for the 5k

And then we moved near Section 120 to start it off on the 100 level concourse.

Getting ready to start the race

During the run, I slowed down a couple times for pictures from my Blackberry. Here is a shot from the upper deck. You can see runners along the warning track.

I will be running the inaugural Damon Runyon 5K Run/Walk for Cancer Research at Yankee Stadium this coming Sunday, and I just got the route we’ll be taking.

sneaker-stadiumThis is certainly a different sort of path, and I can’t wait to do it Sunday morning.

  • START LINE on the 100 level concourse, near Section 120
  • Run two laps around the 100 level concourse
  • After second lap, near Section 126, turn left behind concessions, then take ramp to sub-zero level
  • Run through the sub-zero level
  • Exit the sub-zero level between the Bullpen and Monument Park, turn right onto warning track
  • Run two laps around the warning track that circles the field
  • Exit warning track to the right, return to sub-zero level
  • Run back through sub-zero level, turn left toward right field stairs
  • Climb 103 steps to 200 level concourse
  • Run the length of the 200 level concourse toward left field stairs (near Section 234)
  • Climb 64 steps to 300 level concourse
  • Run the length of the 300 level concourse (Water stop located in front of Jim Beam Suite near Section 320)
  • At Section 310, turn right down ramp near Gate 6, then take ramp down to the Great Hall
  • Run short distance through Great Hall (please stay to your right)
  • Turn right up the Great Hall stairs to 200 level concourse
  • Climb 55 steps to 200 level concourse
  • Run the length of the 200 level concourse toward left field stairs (near Section 234)
  • Climb 64 steps to 300 level concourse

  • At Section 310, turn right down ramp near Gate 6, then take ramp down to the Great Hall

These will be some great views, but all those steps! I’d better take some Advil before the race.

Please support me with a donation of any amount for the for the run

I am a Mess

by Shawn Collins on November 8, 2009

I’ve barely run in the past month, and just got back from my first run in a while. It was tough and pathetic. I couldn’t push past 1 3/4 miles today.

Over the past month, I’ve had a combination of lots of travel and sickness, which led to me having little time and energy for exercise.

But enough with the excuses. I’ve got a 5k in 7 days, so it’s time to get back in a big way.

It’s been getting pretty cold lately with temperatures near freezing. Since I’ve been running on roads, I am a little uncomfortable possibly hitting black ice, combined with lots of acorns and sticks on the ground.

So, I’ve moved to the gym to run on the treadmill.

I prefer the outdoors scenery, but it is nice to have climate control and no risks of foreign objects twisting my ankles.

And maybe that cold weather could be detrimental to my health, based on the folks that died at the Detroit marathon.

I just signed up for the inaugural Damon Runyon 5K Run/Walk for Cancer Research at Yankee Stadium, taking place November 15, 2009.

sneaker-stadiumThis unique event will actually take place inside Yankee Stadium. Runners will get to explore the Stadium and finish with a lap around the warning track that circles the field.

100% of the money I raise will be used by the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation to fund innovative research by today’s most brilliant young scientists, who are racing to find the causes and cures for all types of cancer.

Please do what you can to sponsor me for the run

And if you’d like to run, I’ve set up a team and would love to run with you. You can join my team “Affiliate Summit”, join another team, or run as an individual.

I’ve Run 100 Miles

by Shawn Collins on September 27, 2009

Today, I ran nearly 3 miles to bring my total to 100 miles since I started running in July.

My miles are tracked by a little Nike+ device in my shoe and my iPod Touch.

You can see my profile at Nike for my history of runs at http://my.nike.com/affiliatetip.

100-miles

It’s exciting to see that milestone, since I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to stick with this.

Now, I just need to build up more stamina, lose weight, and run farther and longer.

Working on a Treadmill

by Shawn Collins on September 25, 2009

I posted an interview a couple weeks back I had with a woman who works while using her treadmill, and I’ve been thinking about doing it myself.

I’ve been reading about other folks working on treadmills, and it seems like a great way to optimize time.

But I’ve been apprehensive about investing in a treadmill, since I have a gym membership, and not really any place to put it.

Besides, I figured I could rig a desk on a treadmill, but I’m not particularly handy. So, I was excited to come across SurfShelf.com, which enables you to connect a laptop to a treadmill, elliptical, or stationary bike.

It looks easy to set up and doesn’t cost too much. Maybe I should get one of these things going, even if I’d have to use it in the garage.

I Just Got a RoadID

by Shawn Collins on September 23, 2009

I noticed some people wearing a little wristband when I ran a 5k recently, and I asked about it. It turns out it was a product called a RoadID.

The RoadID is a form of ID that allows you to personalize up to 7 lines of laser-engraved text, and there are versions to wear on the wrist, ankle, shoe, etc.

RoadID

That sounded like a great idea, since I typically just carry a key and a couple dollars when I run. And when I’m pushing myself, it feels like a feather could knock me down.

If something were to happen, I wouldn’t have ID. So, I got the wrist version of the RoadID, and look forward to getting it in the mail.

I Was Faster in My Second 5k

by Shawn Collins on September 21, 2009

Yesterday was my second 5k race, and while it was slower than I’d like, I had a big improvement in time from my first 5k race back in July 2009.

Back then, I ran the route in 34:24, and this time it was 30:09.

So, I am still not a trailblazer, but I am satisfied that I accomplished a new PR (personal record) and shaved off more than 4 minutes from my previous time.

My time for the Berkeley Heights 5k 2009

Here I am in the approach to the final turn. I am the one in the long-sleeve black shirt.

Approaching the final turn at the Berkeley Heights 5k

I was pretty worn out after the race. After a few minutes, some watermelon and half a bagel, I was ready for my close-up.

My family was out of town for my first race, so it was nice to have everybody there this time around.

Now, I’ve got to find my next race.

My Second 5k Race

by Shawn Collins on September 19, 2009

I picked up the packet this afternoon for my second 5k race – I will be runner 4949.

It’s the 2009 Berkeley Heights 5k – one of the annual races in my town.

While that won’t be the first number across the finish line, I will be crossing the finish line, and that’s a win to me, since I just started running in June.

If you’re thinking about getting in shape and think it’s something you can’t do – try it. Ease yourself in. It sure does feel great when you pass the smallest milestones.
